Josh Jacobs: the Underdog No One Expected

By: Landon and Braeden R.

Josh Jacobs was born February 11th, 1998 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents separated when he was 8 years old. He ended up living with his dad and when they were waiting for there apartment to get ready, they slept on relatives’ couches and eventually in his dad’s suburban. Then they moved in with four other siblings, then his dad lost his job.

For the next two years all of them went from motel to motel, eating mostly rice and ramen noodles. Being homeless pushed Jacobs even harder. After two years of being homeless, his dad earned a job and they bought a house. Now that he had a chance to go to high school, he could do what he loved, Football.

During his senior season, he had no scholarship offers and had zero stars on recruiting websites. A coach from Texas then told him “to create a Twitter including all of his highlights.” After this, scholarship offers started flooding in. Then the unthinkable happened, after being homeless and moving from motel to motel, he landed a scholarship offer from Alabama, one of the best teams in the country.  After putting up crazy numbers in his four seasons at Alabama, he was projected as a first round pick to the Raiders.

During draft day, there it was, the Raiders were on the clock. Many other teams showed interest in Jacobs so he was unsure if he would go to Las Vegas. Roger Goodell stated, “For the 24th pick in the 2019 draft, the Las Vegas Raiders select, Josh Jacobs, running back, Alabama.” This quote would forever change Josh Jacobs’ life. He was headed to Las Vegas!

He started pretty well being one healthy, but two, a good running back. But then, in week 7 against the Green Bay Packers, he hurt his back. He went to the locker room and took a heavy painkiller and finished the game. This caused him to miss one game. He still put up amazing stats that year. In 242 attempts, he had 1,150 yards and 7 touchdowns. This earned him a runner up spot in the Rookie of the Year contest.

To conclude, Josh Jacobs was someone no one expected to be an all star running back playing for the Raiders. He shows kids that if they try hard enough they can accomplish their dreams. Now, he has the ability to buy his dad a house in which he recently did. In our opinions, he has a very bright future ahead.
